Cheryl Carter, president of Party for a Living, has 20 years of experience under her belt. In addition to providing costumed characters and event planning services, Carter also assists others who want to open their own similar business. Her first recommendation for would-be event planners is "know thyself." "Know your skills," she explains. "What are your strengths and weaknesses? You may be terrific at planning and implementing events but hate making sales or working with the financial side of the business. You'll have to either get training to improve your weaknesses or hire someone to handle those areas."

Networking is critical, she says. "Join organizations for event planners to meet and learn from your competitors. Attend quality networking events that can get you in front of many businesses at a time."
